![]() ![]() ![]() “The phrase ‘blue plate special’ has always been one of the homiest, coziest, most sweetly nostalgic phrases in the English language for me,” Christensen writes. Eventually, there was divorce, a move to Arizona and her mother cooking traditional American blue-plate special meals of mashed potatoes, meatloaf, French-cut string beans. But most lawyers don’t work with the Black Panthers, as her father did, and most suburban upbringings don’t have the fervor and spark of Berkeley in the 1960s, where her family lived.Īlthough she portrays that environment with the awe and admiration she felt as a child, the book begins with something much darker: Christensen’s earliest memory, of her father striking her mother. She was the eldest of four sisters born to a lawyer father and a mother who was studying to be a psychologist. ![]() Christensen grew up in the 1960s and ‘70s in an environment that was by turns fairly average and entirely atypical. ![]()

Kristin cast house of night books6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Not only that, but he's calling her A-ya, like the girl whose embrace trapped him before. To add to her problems, Zoey is unnerved to find Kalona can enter her dreams. And on top of that there are the red fledglings, who claim to be reformed since getting some sense of their humanity back, but even Stevie Rae, the only red Vampyre, isn't exactly how she was before she died. Though the tunnels have been vastly improved (thanks to Aphrodite's credit card) they are still tunnels, and Zoey keeps sensing darkness and evil lingering around them. Kalona's brain washing powers have turned all the fledglings and teachers into 'pod people', à la Invasion of the Body Snatchers and still no one seems to notice that Neferet has turned her back on the Goddess, Nyx.Īfter escaping the House of Night more or less intact, Zoey and the gang, now including Erik Night and Darius of the Sons of Erebus, flee to the prohibition-era tunnels where Stevie Rae and her red fledglings have been hiding out. ![]() Fallen Angel Kalona, along with High Priestess Neferet have taken over the House of Night. ![]() Hopefully a stepping stone to better things to come for the House of Night' series.Īll hell is breaking loose in the Tulsa. Too much love life, not enough action, and it all happens a little too quickly. Summary: An okay book that doesn't quite match the promise of its predecessor. ![]()

Ussama makdisi age of coexistence6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Moving from the nineteenth century to the present, this groundbreaking book explores, without denial or equivocation, the politics of pluralism during the Ottoman Empire and in the post-Ottoman Arab world. It shows how a region rich with ethnic and religious diversity created a modern culture of coexistence amid Ottoman reformation, European colonialism, and the emergence of nationalism. Ussama Makdisi’s Age of Coexistence reveals a hidden and hopeful story that counters this clichéd portrayal. Today’s headlines paint the Middle East as a collection of war-torn countries and extremist groups consumed by sectarian rage. ![]() reminds us of the critical declarations of secularism which existed in the history of the Middle East."-Robert Fisk, The Independent ![]()

Rogue squadron michael a stackpole6/7/2023 ![]() A former Corellian Security officer turned Imperial turned Rebel, Corran has spent much of the time prior to this book on the run from a man he used to work with, Imperial Security officer Kirtan Loor. The exception is, thankfully, the main character of the book (and, I presume, the series) – Corran Horn. There may be others (one character, Tycho, is mentioned as having been a part of the attack on the second Death Star at Endor), but that brings me to my point – most of the characters in X-Wing: Rogue Squadron are, frankly, forgettable. The only returning characters to my memory are Wedge Antilles, who featured in all three original films, and Admiral Ackbar, who only featured in Return of the Jedi. ![]() ![]() Stackpole’s first entry in the X-Wing series are entirely new. In fact, the majority of the characters in Michael A. ![]() So, here we have the first novel on the list that doesn’t feature the main cast of Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, Artoo, and Threepio. ![]()

A million little things james frey6/7/2023 ![]() Because of this construction, the tone of the memoir is spontaneous, raw and revelatory. With the use of repetition, run-on sentences, and lackadaisical punctuation, Frey's voice feels casual and natural, more like a stream of consciousness than a crafted, structured narrative. Toneįrey's storytelling is sparse and unadorned. Frey's narrative incorporates a lot of dialogue, both internal and with other individuals. However, the events in the memoir are told logically and consistently, and within the world of the book the narrator's voice is a trustworthy one. Frey's reliability as a narrator has been called into question by the media, after a sensational expose that revealed that he had made up some of the details in the memoir. The story is told exclusively in first-person narrative, from the point of view of author James Frey. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Luke spends every day alone, hidden in his attic room, until he meets Jen, a ""shadow child"" secreted in the Baron house next door. Next, the Garners are hit with a crippling tax bill and ordered to sell their hogs, so Mom has to get a factory job. ![]() His troubles multiply when the government makes his dirt-poor parents sell the woods surrounding their farm in order to build a housing development for ""Barons"" (the privileged elite), and it therefore becomes too dangerous for Luke to go outside. Born into a totalitarian state that brutally enforces a two-children-only policy, 12-year-old Luke Garner, an ""illegal"" third child, has spent his entire life hiding from anyone outside his immediate family. Haddix (Running Out of Time) chillingly imagines a dystopia in this futuristic novel. ![]()

The house of wolves patterson6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() The result hits his fighting selfish children, 3 sons – Danny, Joe, and Thomas and 1 daughter – Jenny, with a shocking surprise. Or did he? It is very apparent from page 5 that he was murdered. That is until he was found drowned in the bay, somehow falling overboard off his boat. The father Joe was the patriarchal owner of the San Francisco Wolves NFL franchise and the San Francisco Tribune newspaper. “The House of Wolves” is the story of the dangerously disjointed, rich, and powerful Wolf family. Parker’s classic series Jesse Stone, Spenser (taking over from Ace Atkins), and Sunny Randall (handing off to Alison Gaylin). In this outing Patterson has teamed up for a second time with Mike Lupica, a veteran sports writer, novelist, and current caretaker of Robert B. ![]() I have really enjoyed some, liked some, and didn’t really care for others. Some might ask why and that’s another whole discussion best saved for another day. ![]() I read most of his books and have for several years. Let’s start this off with my usual upfront James Patterson disclosure. ![]()

![]() Ryan.finds everything he needs to traverse the universe of the human heart. Unfortunately, Cronin’s topsy-turvy thriller is torn apart by the unsustainable imbalance between its profound intentions and its ultimately silly execution. The Ferryman wants to explore what’s real and what’s illusion, and I’m as eager as the next Platonist to be enlightened by the true nature of reality, but this late in the philosophical game, authors have got to bring something special to the cave wall. ![]() But unfortunately, those deeper issues dissolve in a vat of melodrama. This is clearly meant to be a stunning development, ripe with provocative reflections on the nature of consciousness and the creative power of perception. ![]() ![]() The creepy utopia Proctor depended on vanishes, and he finds himself in a hallucinatory realm of baffling experiences. But Cronin has something far more ambitious and metaphysical in mind, which throws The Ferryman off its tracks. ![]() All the elements are here for a spectacular sci-fi thriller full of piercing implications for our own class-bound society, with its paralyzing fear of aging. Although Cronin made his reputation by destroying the world, he’s actually better at building it, with all its attendant faults. The eerie first half - by far the better - is set on Prospera, an island paradise. Pan The Washington Post To get through this chaotic story, you’ll need the red pill and the blue pill and some Adderall. ![]()
