A Fallen Heart by Cate Ashwood6/9/2023 ![]() My beta readers are so generous with their time and they aren’t afraid to kick my ass when I need it.įor this book, there is one person in particular who helped me beyond measure. The friends I’ve made in this community are ones that I know I will have for life. It goes beyond those who are paid to help me with my work, though. I have a whole team behind me who are as invested in my stories as I am and I couldn’t be more indebted their hard work and patience. Fast forward four years and writing and publishing is more fun than I ever imagined it could be. ![]() It wasn’t until I was nearly finished the manuscript that I let my husband and sister in on the fact that I was writing. I wrote in my living room with the lights off after my husband had gone to bed. When I began this journey, it was a solitary endeavor. Since I started publishing four years ago, they haven’t lost a single ounce of thrill, but more than that, with each book that is released, I am more and more grateful that this is my actual life. Release days are always filled with excitement for me. Thank you so much to The Novel Approach for hosting me today on release day for A Fallen Heart! ![]() Enjoy Cate’s guest post, and then be sure to check out the Rafflecopter widget below to enter for the chance to win an e-copy of the book. Harriet the spy book6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() Readers of any age can pick it up and find themselves somewhere in the pages of the book. Why is it that?Īnd that’s why Harriet is a children’s classic. Yet somehow this precocious, plucky, and some may say persnickety little girl has outlasted them all. There have been many children’s books published that year that most people alive likely couldn’t even name. The book was originally published in 1964 and since then has kept its tight grip on readers. While adaptations are commonplace in Hollywood, it still may surprise people that Harriet still lingers. ![]() Then in 2010, Disney released a modernized movie subtitled Blog Wars, starring Jennifer Stone, better known as Harper from Wizards of Waverly Place, in the lead role. The first was back 1996 by Nickelodeon, starring Michelle Tratchenberg as the titular character. ![]() This is the third time that the 11-year-old spy has been given the screen treatment. Pond claire louise bennett summary6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() She is dressed in a vibrant, multicoloured blouse, buttoned to the throat, a large red necklace resting on top of it, her dark hair pulled back neatly from her face. ![]() ![]() “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that something really kicked in during that period of time,” she says in her gentle west English accent over coffee and scones in her adopted home town of Galway, where she has lived for 20 years. “I’ve been writing the last six, seven, eight years, but badly, pretty badly, as far as I’m concerned.” Lockdown liberated something in her writing. But there was a point when she wasn’t sure whether she would write another book at all. Six years later, she has returned with her debut novel, Checkout 19, an extraordinary affirmation of her writing talent. Bennett was shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize in 2016 and lauded by writers like Deborah Levy, Karl Ove Knausgaard and Eimear McBride. First published by the Stinging Fly in Ireland, Pond was later picked up by Fitzcarraldo Editions and by Riverhead, both with reputations for publishing literary work of exceptional quality. Claire-Louise Bennett’s debut collection of stories, Pond, published in 2015, announced the arrival of a striking new voice. ![]()

![]() ![]() And Commonwealth is one of the most highly regarded pieces of fiction of the past few years and comes highly recommended by many, including my boss. As I’ve recently been on an essay collection kick, I chose This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage – a collection of personal essays about the real world of Patchett’s life. Since then, I’ve been desperate to get my hands on more of her writing. A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 2017An electrifying first collection from one of the most exciting short story writers of our time'I can’t recall the last time I laughed this hard at a book. I reread it this October and was once again overwhelmed by just how much I love Ann Patchett’s ability to tell a story. This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage and Commonwealth by Ann Patchettīel Canto is one of my favorite books of all time. I received it in the Ardent Biblio book exchange and was told it was a favorite from middle school of the giver! Interested in Flipped? SHOP AMAZON SHOP INDIE A romance told by two voices, this sounds like an undeniably adorable read. Moshfegh is our Flannery OConnor, and Homesick for Another World is her Everything That Rises Must Converge or A Good Man Is Hard to Find. One of the two books in this stack that was actually gifted to me, Flipped sounds like it is potentially the cutest middle school love story in the world. ![]()

Book the barbizon6/8/2023 ![]() Among the well-known residents were Titanic survivor Molly Brown, writers Sylvia Plath and Joan Didion, actresses Grace Kelly and Liza Minnelli, and so many others. This incredibly well-researched history of a hotel and the fascinating inhabitants of its small rooms doubles as a story about how the roles of women have changed throughout the twentieth century…and how the Barbizon-built in 1927 as a safe haven for the "modern woman" working in New York-was there to see it all. There are no spoilers ahead (since the events of The Barbizon all occurred in the past), but if you’d prefer to read the book first, you can pick up a copy of The Barbizon here. ![]() This week in the Bluestocking Salon, we interviewed author Paulina Bren on her research strategies, how to teach while writing, and her newest venture!
